A very good early quarter calf binding. 8vo. 7.5" x 5.0" x 1.25". Dark brown morocco spine with gilt titles, over marbled boards. Corners rounded. Plain endpapers. Loosely inserted type-written note dated Jan 26, 1942 relating to the previous owner, on headed paper (25, Park Town, Oxford.) signed by Bryce McMaster. Decorated title in red & black. Verso with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth at prayer. Every page with decorated border illustrated with designs after Albert Durer, Hans Holbein, and others. The editor's presentation copy, inscribed to the recto of the front free endpaper, 'To Victor Leuliette, Esq, With kind regards, from Percy W. Ames&apos.A facsimile of Queen Elizabeth I's translation of Marguerite d'Angouleme's 1531 poem 'Miroir de l"âme Pécheresse&apos. This facsimile was produced for the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom. Elizabeth translated this poem in 1544, when she was just 11 years old. The translation was produced in a unique embroidered manuscript book, which Elizabeth gifted to her step mother, Katherine Parr. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one-hundred and thirty-two plates, the majority of which show the faithful facsimile of Elizabeth's own manuscript and her handwriting. The book is now owned by the Bodleian Library, evidenced in this work which shows the Library's stamps to the manuscript pages. Edited with an introduction and notes by Percy W. Ames. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, a little rubbed to the leather. Some light spots to the leather. A couple of light marks to the boards.
